Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Review

fB4iTMEQewg7NNkLzdCth6ZGNA0Most of our listeners know that I don’t make it out to the theaters very often. I have been working a lot and my boss invited me to go see the brand new Sherlock Holmes. I took the 2.5 hour break (including driving) and decided to see what kind of mess Robert Downey, Jr. would get in this time. I have owned the original Sherlock Holmes on Blu-ray for months and about a week ago I finally decided to give it a watch. I really enjoyed the first movie even though I did think it was a bit slow. What made the first movie was Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

I am happy to say that the spot on acting, comedy, and great overall feel of the time period is back in the sequel. Set after the events of the first Sherlock Holmes Dr. Watson is about to get married, however recent events such as bombings have Sherlock Holmes on edge and believes a mystery is at hand. The story continues on as you would suspect as a villain rises and Holmes must figure everything out. This time around I really didn’t feel that anything was a true mystery that I was on a ride for and would try to solve. It felt more like things were falling into place and you just sit and take it in.

While the story I felt was lacking what was not is action. This movie is jam packed with a ton of action and I might even say non stop. Explosions, bullet time, shootings, hand to hand action, and even some chess playing, yes it is all there. While this really helped move the story along I felt as though the use of bullet time was just overdone. You might feel different about this, but one scene in particular was a chase through the woods and it was just so unnecessary to have the entire scene slow motion. It really felt like a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Inception.

Alright with all that said I really enjoyed it. Setting, costume design, cinematography, and acting were all fantastic. Just like the first movie though RDJ and JL were spot on and just a pleasure to watch. So if you enjoyed the first Holmes you will surely enjoy A Game of Shadows.

Recommendation: See it in theaters.
